Humanitarian interventions and community stabilization in Mauritania

IOM Mauritania has been active in the region since April 2013 following the massive influx of Malian refugees. The projects it implements focus on community stabilization of host populations and support for refugees in the M’Béra camp. In the Hod Ech Chargui region, access to water is often difficult, as livestock is the main means of subsistence and animal health is a priority to feed families. The low rainfall over the past 5 years and the cessation of transhumance to Mali due to the security situation have created a difficult context for the host population. The influx of Malian refugees with their livestock is putting additional pressure on pastures and water points. Hence the importance of balancing humanitarian assistance for better peaceful coexistence.
